The Benefits of Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) Print E-mail

For the longest time the .com domains has been king and the most popular in the domain market. Things are about to change.

The popularity of ccTLDs is on the rise. ccTLDs such as .ca or .cn are gathering momentum and it doesn't look like this is going to abate anytime soon. It has been reported that .ca has reached its millionth milestone in the beginning of 2008. And is the 17th largest domain name when compared to generic names such as .com and .net. Note: .ca is reserved entirely for the use of Canadian citizens, residents, businesses, and organizations.

And ten there's China's ccTLD - .cn. The .cn domain just passed its 6 millionth registry in early 2008. Wow. And it is reported that the .cn domain has over 20,000 registries per day.

What's The Big Deal?

The research indicates that it’s predominately end users who are buying these ccTLDs. The purpose being a specific web use, and not for parking and allows a "geographically" targeted web approach. Much like what Google has done with local searches. Local domains are gaining importance as well.

The .us TLD market is growing with over 1500 new domains registered everyday. With more and more of these domains being registered daily, the value of the .US market continues to be driven up. Now is a good time to begin buying .us TLD. Consider that the most important .us domain site is Del.icio.us.
